EXTRACT FROM TRAINING MANUAL As a facilitator your role may be clear, but on occasion may be less obvious. Rebel – you may find yourself as the element that is disorganising a well versed image of a perfect family system. There may be family secrets. You do not need to know the details of a family secret to enable you to work with one – it just needs acknowledging, but you may find representatives of family members becoming angry. Support – you may find you hold a place that is rightly held by someone who isn’t available. Make sure you leave the work clear that you are not part of it, and that the unavailable member has indeed been brought in. Your job is to observe and enable reporting. Always notice what happens to all of the participants, and the client when any other representative moves, or says something. Ask “How is x doing” frequently – it enables reporting without guiding.
